Welcome to TRACE 2022

May 24-27, Erlangen, Germany

Tree-Rings in Archaeology, Climatology and Ecology

The international conference "TRACE 2022" will bring together scientists and students that use tree rings as archives of environmental, historical, and climatological information. The conference will take place in Erlangen, Germany, from May 24-27, 2022. The conference part is preceded by several pre-conference workshops.

The conference aims to stimulate exchange of knowledge and concepts between different scientific disciplines working with tree rings. This is reflected in the topics of the conference sessions, which range from methodological aspects to different branches of basic and applied sciences, including dendroclimatology, tree and forest ecology, tree physiology and dendroarchaeology.

TRACE 2022 is organized by the tree-ring lab of the Institute of Geography, Friedrich-Alexander-University (FAU) of Erlangen-Nürnberg, in cooperation with the Association for Tree-Ring Research (ATR).

The organizing committee is looking forward to cordially welcoming you in Erlangen!

Trace 2022 will be held in a hybrid format.

After a long time of Covid restrictions and lack of personal contacts, we want to motivate the researchers in our scientific community to meet again and to discuss scientific aspects and exchange thoughts personally. However, we are aware that meanwhile many colleagues got used to online formats and want to benefit from the technical progress of participating in events free of travel costs. Therefore, the local hosts and the ATR board together decided to organize TRACE 2022 as a hybrid event.

However, hybrid events have their own logistic and organizational challenges. While it is possible to broadcast presentation, it is rather challenging to have discussions in real time with an audience being in a room in presence and other persons pitched in (time lags in the broadcast process, technical problems, acoustic quality).
To avoid such difficulties, which would cause a lot of unpleasantness for people being present in an audience, and which would also lead to a considerable delay in the session program, we decided that participants following the lections online will not get the possibility to participate in discussions.
